Primary School pupils hear Bible stories
'Enabling every child to hear the story of the Bible at school in their primary years'
‘Open The Book’ is a programme for teaching Bible stories to children, using props and costumes, so as to involve them in a fun and engaging way.
A team from St Andrews Church in Ipswich has been visiting Britannia Primary School regularly for over three years to lead the ‘Open the Book’ collective worship programme.
Team member, Dawn Gillett, says “As a church we have always valued connection with the school (which is next door) and had been praying about how to further the relationship. The school have always been very welcoming and appreciative of what we do.
We have enjoyed getting the children involved with the stories and teaching them simple Christian songs. This has led to the whole of Key stage one visiting the church at Easter and Christmas for a story and activity, which has been enjoyed by everyone. A particular highlight was watching over 200 children and their teachers singing ‘Our God is a great big God’ at Christmas.
Going into the school on a regular basis has also led to some interesting conversations, as members of the team are often recognised by the children when out and about in the local area.
We give thanks to God for this opportunity to be involved with the local school and community and would encourage any church that is praying about how to be involved with their local schools to consider ‘Open the Book’.”
Open the Book" is a series of 90 Bible stories, presented weekly over three years in primary schools. It is a n ational project, adopted for use in Ipswich by CYM in conjunction with local volunteer storytellers. More details can be found on the Project Directory section of the website Click Here
